As for the band's first album......here's a little story:
Drawing With Chalk and the songs created for its soundtrack CD - "Drawn In Chalk" by The Turnback - are about the universal theme of following dreams and persevering in the face of astronomical odds. The real life story of how everything was created and how both the film and music have been brought to the brink of unprecedented success is a similar story. It is a story of how a group of actors, writers and musicians followed a lifelong dream and despite a lack of money and no support from movie studios or record labels, created a film and a collection of songs that have won rave reviews and multiple awards in the USA, Canada and England.
The idea for the feature film DRAWING WITH CHALK was hatched by Fredonia College buddies and now, brothers-in-law, Todd Giglio and Christopher Springer in 2006 in a final effort to take their lifelong pursuit of careers in film and music into their own hands. Prompted by their own experiences as 30-something artists facing tough choices about the future, the two co-wrote and star as lifelong friends, Jay and Matt, two 40 year-old musicians attempting one last shot at the big time as life and responsibility loom. The original music in the film, obviously an integral part of the story, was written and performed by The Turnback, of which Todd is a member along with Kenny Sherman and Barry Nagel. The film, while not entirely autobiographical, draws upon many of their real life experiences.
Using all of their savings, credit cards as well as loans and donations from friends and relatives, they were able to finance the film and the music themselves. Despite being on the brink of bankruptcy and almost being forced to close down production several times and despite having to sell all of the equipment used to make the film, and now having to sell the equipment in their home recording studio in order to raise the funds needed to finish the film and the CD - they have been able to produce a completed movie and soundtrack whose quality is on par with anything produced by Hollywood or major record labels.
The soundtrack, which is also the debut CD release by The Turnback, is titled "Drawn In Chalk" and was mixed by Grammy Award winning recording engineer and producer Jeff Peters, who has worked with such legendary artists as The Beach Boys and Brian Setzer and currently produces the indie fave band Goldspot. The music on the CD was transferred to tape and analog mastered by Joe Gastwirt, another legendary engineer who has mastered music for the likes of Tom Petty, The Talking Heads, Pearl Jam, Jimi Hendrix and countless others in a stellar career that has spanned over 40 years!
The self-made video created for the song "Beyond Belief", which the band filmed entirely on the iPhone 4, was selected as one of ten most Compelling Music Videos Shot on the Apple iPhone by Mashable.com in December 2010 and their latest video for the song "Cellophane Sky", received over 105,000 views within its first 4 weeks of release on 10/19/2011.
The band blends elements of 60's and '70's power pop and rock together with modern elements to create a sound that is at once familiar yet distinctly original and timeless; a sound that fits comfortably into any era - yet never becomes dated, tired or trendy. The Turnback's complex, yet warm vocal harmonies add an aspect to their songs that is sorely missing from much of today's music.
The CD has been named to multiple Best of 2011 lists and the band has received accolades from the likes of IPO founder David Bash, Blitz magazine, former Not Lame Records president Bruce Bodeen, Powerpopaholic and many others:
